If I have my own set of sugar functions or macros for thing X, would releasing them as a package using the sugar/x collection be a good idea? Or would it step on this package's toes too much, so to speak?

I'm not the package police, so do what you like. If you want commit access to this repo so you can fold your functions into this package, that's fine too.
